"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous fans have also coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a close gang. Their music videos often feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international audience.

But the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
