A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
